Hello there!
My name is Jake McKeown and I am a UX/UI Designer with experience in Front End
Development.
My favourite thing about Design, particularly UX/UI Design is that it satisfies both sides of my brain as I get to use the logic driven side when collecting data for UX and the creative side when it comes to designing a user intefrace.
My approach to getting good user research is to use the design “double diamond” process, even though user research is usually seen as just one of the diamonds generally, you can use the understand, define, develop and finalise phases conduct meaningful research.
To make a good product for the user we need to be able to empathise with them to understand their needs and goals. To do this I usually carry out empathy mapping and creating “I like, I wish, what if” lists and then translating those things to a feature matrix after interviews.
Qualitative interviews are our bread and butter for subjective research, given the right questions are asked. My approach is to usually conduct one-on-one interviews, stakeholder interviews and focus groups. Qualitative research enables us to “connect” with prospective users.
For wireframing I take the design into as low fidelity as possible while maintaining functionality. This allows me to focus on the flow and function of the project without the “Bells and Whistles” that may clutter or sway some bias from the nice visuals. Without function design is just art.
During the prototyping phase I go all out in terms of fidelity and animation as these are the core for presentations to stakeholders. I mainly use figma for this and the wireframing phase although have branched out with Adobe XD as I am familiar with the Adobe Suite.
User testing is something I capitalize off of during the prototyping phase as whenever I come to a split decision in terms of design doing some basic A/B testing helps as it’s basic, unbiased testing that has good impact versus the little effort to set up. I also rely heavily on proper user testing when redesigning a project.
